Alexandria’s Premiere Christian Classical Academy for Junior Kindergarten-Eighth Grade
Immanuel Lutheran School was originally founded in downtown Alexandria in 1871 as a mission of Immanuel Lutheran Church. After thriving for forty years, the school was closed during World War I. As World War II was ending, Immanuel Lutheran Church moved to its current location. The school reopened in 1945 and has flourished ever since.
Immanuel offers a Christian and classical education in Northern Virginia, with a liberal arts curriculum for Junior Kindergarten (pre-kindergarten) through 8th grade.
What makes us distinctive from other classical schools? Besides excellent academics in the core classical disciplines, we offer:
A robust music program
A creative and classical art program
A clear and intellectually serious theological confession
Balanced faculty
Many modernist schools have no men at all on their faculties. At Immanuel, we believe children need both male and female teachers role models for healthy maturation.
In 2024 we celebrated twenty years of classical education at Immanuel! Immanuel’s robust faculty include experts in Latin, music, art, history, reading, and literature. In addition to the standard classroom teachers, ILS has full-time teachers in music, art, and physical education. Many of our faculty members have advanced degrees and speak/read multiple languages (including Greek, Spanish, Russian, French, German, and Hebrew). ILS recently placed in the top ten nationwide in performance on the Classical Learning Test. Visit our dedicated school website for more information.
What Is a Classical Education?
Classical education aims for wisdom, eloquence, and virtue. The patriarchs of western civilization understood that education was more than the acquisition of basic skills and mere competency. The purpose of education was to transform, to elevate, and to refine the mind and the soul. Our students enjoy a rich academic environment that includes Shurley grammar, Singapore mathematics, classical literature, Latin (beginning in 3rd grade), science, weekly chapel services, Christian character formation, world and American history, music, art, and much more. Immanuel is fully accredited by the Consortium for Classical Lutheran Education (with an exemplary rating) and the National Lutheran Schools Association, and a member of the Association for Classical Christian Schools.
