First Grade

Curriculum

The first grade curriculum at Immanuel focuses on the mastery of basic skills, and on repetition. Here, we begin to strengthen and build upon the foundation set in place in the Kindergarten years. Students repeatedly work with the phonograms, begin silent reading, and start paragraph writing. In mathematics, students master addition and subtraction, and get a jump start on multiplication. Second grade hold no fear over our first graders!

Our first grade curriculum includes these objectives:

Theology

  • Learn the Commandments and their meanings
  • Memorize Bible verses
  • Recite the Lord's Prayer and the Apostle's Creed
  • Talk about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection
  • Tell how God made the world
  • Learn how to participate in weekly chapel services
  • Sing a variety of hymns
  • Tell about God's love for all people

Social/Emotional

  • Follow directions
  • Use appropriate manners
  • Accept responsibility for actions
  • Treat others with kindness
  • Respect adults and other students
  • React appropriately when upset
  • Learn to complete work independently
  • Participate in the classroom
  • Behave appropriately in public on field trips

Gross Motor Skills

  • Participate in PE and Recess activities

Fine Motor Skills

  • Hold pencils and other writing/drawing instruments correctly
  • Cut neatly on the lines
  • Form letters correctly, neatly, and appropriately sized
  • Write on the designated lines

Reading/Writing/Grammar/Spelling

  • Identify the title, author, characters, setting, and plot of a story
  • Describe why the student likes or does not like parts of a story
  • Read stories on an appropriate level with fluency and comprehension
  • Identify various parts of speech (subjects nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, etc.)
  • Write sentences that begin with a capital letter, and have end punctuation.
  • Indent the first line of a paragraph.
  • Write a paragraph that begins with a topic sentence, and ends with a closing sentence.

  • Tell time and distinguish between a.m. and p.m.
  • Identify and create patterns
  • Use graphs and venn diagrams
  • Learnd addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts
  • Divide objects equally into groups
  • Solve story problems
  • Count money amounts
  • Recognize fractions
  • Sort objects
  • Learn multi-digit addition and subtraction
  • Measure using inches and centimeters
  • Distinguish between even and odd numbers

Science

  • Identify habitats and their characteristics
  • Describe sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks
  • Learn about outer space
  • Explain the life cycles of butterflies and frogs
  • Describe seasonal changes
  • Discuss clouds, and the water cycle
  • Describe the the five senses and important parts of the body
  • Identify how plants grow, and their needs
  • Talk about the states of matter

History/Geography

  • Describe the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome
  • Identify the seven continents and four oceans, and find them on a map
  • Talk about famous explorers
  • Describe several tribes of Native Americans
  • Describe the Pilgrims
  • Talk about famous Americans throughout history

Music

  • Learn proper singing posture, breathing technique, and tone
  • Identify melody, theme, and variation in music listening exercises
  • Recognize important Italian music terminology
  • Expand knowledge of beat and rhythm (long note vs. short note)
  • Learn chant style singing

Art

  • Identify different characteristics of lines (thick, broken, curved, short, etc.)
  • Identify the primary colors and mix them to make secondary and tertiary colors
  • Create different kinds of shapes
  • Design a symmetrical picture
  • Overlap shapes to learn the concept of depth perception in art
  • Study and discuss works of famous artists
